Last Thursday nine out of seventeen Jubilee congregations in Portland and SW Washington gathered for a summer picnic at the residence of Nancy Johns. We shared our passions about the world and our particular interest and concern about the impact of the debt burden on many countries in the Global South. Karen Schmidt, member of Ainsworth UCC, and an organizer of the picnic, made the banner calling for new global leadership on poverty/development and debt cancellation. Twenty or so of us enthusiastically yelled "Cancel the debt" and the photo was taken!! We hope that many congregations and chapters will participate in this campaign.
